It's not about how 'religion sucks', but how it's used and tossed around for political purposes...
David is sarcastically implying that those who proclaim they are waging a 'moral war(In the context of Christianity this time)' and having 'god on their side' are actually doing quite the opposite by the very values they claim to stand behind...
