Over two weeks in March, Australia's Transport Workers Union made a solidarity and fact-finding mission to Los Angeles to see for themselves how their joint employer, the Melbourne-based Toll Group, is treating its workers in America. What they found is that the $8.8 billion dollar global transportation giant treats its first-rate U.S. truck drivers like second-class citizens, and subjects them to third-world working conditions. Several pro-union drivers have been fired by the company for their organizing drive to join the Teamsters, a fact that has led to international condemnation and a vow by the TWU to help their workmates across the Pacific achieve the union recognition they deserve.
