In 1958, Florence Ballard a junior high student living in the Detroit Brewster Douglass Housing Projects met Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, two members of a Detroit male singing group known as The Primes. Since Ballard sang, as did Paul Williams' girlfriend Betty McGlown, The Primes's manager Milton Jenkins decided to create a sister group to The Primes called The Primettes. Ballard recruited her best friend Mary Wilson, who in turn recruited classmate Diane ("Diana") Ross. Mentored and funded by Jenkins, The Primettes began by performing hit songs by artists such as Ray Charles and The Drifters at sock hops, social clubs and talent shows around the Detroit area.

The quartet (later a trio) recorded two sides for the "Lu Pine" label: "Tears of Sorrow" (with Diane Ross on lead) and "Pretty Baby" with Mary Wilson on lead.

The single failed to make a lasting impression, and The Primettes signed with Motown Records in January 1961 as "The Supremes"

Interesting fact : "Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes" was also recorded on "Lu Pine" label.

  • OMG...Diane Ross sounded terrible.

  • Let's face it. Not even Berry would have launched Diana as a solo act back in 62 or 63. The lady was too weird and her voice was terrible. So this is were Mary & Flo came in handy. They added beauty and charm and the combination was magical. Later on H-D-H made Ross sing a tone lower and her unique sound was discovered. From then on Diana took advantage of every opportunity offered by Berry to better herself both as a singer and as sex symbol. She knew what she wanted and went after it.

  • Um hello. Other famous women sang like this. I think it sounds very nice and unique. You all have to stop hating the new and I for one dislike how Diana Ross sounds now, because the industry has made her into their little doll and I believe that she has lost alot of her true self. I don't get all of your problem is. She was beautiful and sounded great the way she was. :)

  • @wozniacki15 true. have a great weekend.

  • @wonderboyjoy i know its just the irony of the situation is weird because if it wasnt for florence who knows what diana ross wud have become since the supremes jump started her career.

  • @8j8j8ae but it was the way they went out...that's historical musical fact.

  • @8j8j8ae if a good voice was all it took there'd be millions of famous singers all over the world. it takes more than just good singing and i am not referring to diana's affair with berry...that is no-one's business except their's.

  • @wozniacki15 just cause you start something doesn't mean you'll be good at it. florence was a good singer but her personality got in her way. many people have great ideas but that's it.

  • @bellacharo thank gos she did...those other two had an idea and they were trumped by an entertainment phenomena called diana ross!

  • is this diana ross singing.......

  • its ironic that florence was the one that started the group but was the one that got the short end of the stick and was replaced first the music industry is a harsh world with many victims florence being a prime example

  • I wonder if any of you old heads ever heard Miss Flo sing IT DOES'NT MATTER HOW I SAY IT. This song is a real lovely song and it has the motown metphors to go with it . I think it is one of her best she shows she could hold her own . If i was Diana i would of felt threaten after hearing this song. But 1 nevers knows do 1 .
