The most poignant part is seeing little Maribel, her sister Laurence, Maribel Vinson Owen and Maribel's Mother all skating together after Laurence's figures practice here in squaw Valley. When you see them all so happy and then think of that poor woman grieving the loss of her daughter and both granddaughters merely a year later it really does break your heart.

The pairs featured are mentioned by the narrator except the first pair is actually the Ludingtons.

  • See the film, “Rise” This is a ONE NIGHT ONLY FILM, shown in theatres on Feb 17th. (50 Year anniversary) It is about this horrible 1961 plane crash, and the effect it had on the skaters who filled their skates afterwards. GET THE WORD OUT about this movie. I just bought my ticket through Fandango. I was 9 when it happened, so I vaguely remember it. Now, because I am an avid fan, if something like that happened these days I do not know what I would do, because I would not be able to take it.

  • @Davethreshold I wish I could but I'm not in the US :( Hopefully there will be a DVD release.

  • Nice to see the Owen family together, and in color. What a shame. Don't know how the grandmother got by losing her daughter & granddaughters like that. Many famlies were devastated by that crash almost 50 years ago. RIP to them all.

  • That "old granny," Gertrude Vinson, was MVO's mother, and was a damn good skater in her own right...even after her whole family's death in the '61 plane crash, she continued to encourage young skaters in the Boston area.

    She passed away in 1969.
