As I said elsewhere:

I would like to see you in the middle of several rock-throwing kids (and adults): would you stop and wait for them to finish you? Would you try to talk to them? One rock can't kill someone inside of a car, but once the windshield is gone you are getting rocks in your face. And once you are not able to drive anymore you can't escape anymore. He also tried to avoid them.

I'd put my life over a hundred rock-throwing NEWBORNS if I'd find myself in the situation.
