Europe has dozens of cultures which usually are so different from each other that it's kind of senseless to refer to "the culture of Europe" as one. That's why American stereotypes about "the europeans" seems very weird to me. I'm a finnish and I cannot comprehend how I'd have more similarities with french people than with americans.

Up until the 2000's it wasn't considered "gay" to be dancing with other men in a non-sexual way. Fashions were different back then as well, as you can see. People wore tight clothes to exercise rather than the baggy shorts and t-shirts kids today wear. Keep in mind as well that in Europe the culture is a lot different and showing your body is not considered sexual or taboo as it is in North America
