PEOPLE ARE BEING DUPLICATED

By Rynaldo Papoy, inspired by Paulo R. C. Barros's videoart

Why do animals become extinct? Forget extinction caused by the predatory action of mankind or natural disasters.

Since the first living organism appeared on planet Earth Terra, some two billions years ago, beings never stopped becoming extinct.

There are a few exceptions, like some vegetals or insects, aged hundreds of millions of years, but even those will become extinct some day.

The most common reason of extinction of a species is hunger. For this reason, the species most adapted to the planet live longer. For example, some insects and vegetals have been alive for hundreds of years: they are able to eat anything and to spend long periods without eating.

Humankind began to extinguish for a strange and new reason: not reproducing any more.

In the 2217th year AC a new record wes established: No baby was born anywhere in the world.

As birth-rate fell, the social problems were also receding. Nobody would believe that humankind might become extinct, as every community believed that another one was still reproducing itself. For an example, let us see the ricest countries counting on birthes in the poor countries of Africa and Asia, while the African and Asian populations believed that the rich countries were continuing birth incentive programs or had created artificial children. And so, humanity continued to decrease and the level of life of the population to improve.

In the 2230 decade no baby was born.

In 2400, there remained about 500 humans in the world, with ages ranging from 180 to 210.

In 2450, there remained four humans in the world.

Flowers had covered the planet, reconquering their room. Animals reproduced themselves normally.

Nearly all machines were out of service, as they weren't needed any more.

Between the four survivors, three were still conscious and reasoning. One of those was called Jean.

Jean sênt his days looking at the Medirterranean Sea, sitting at the port of Marseilles. He was 229 years old and lived under the careful attention of four robots who helped him from the time of awakening until the hour for sleeping. They did everything for him.

Some evening, Jean wandered about and became aware of the fact that Marseilles, besides being desert, was always very well tended and organised. At the difference of other places on the planet, there was no vegetation covering the streets and houses, nor was the ground full of sand or corals. he discovered that robots were keeping the city clean. But why?

Jean asked one of the robots why they kept Marseilles clean. The robot answered that they had been programmed to do it. Keep the town organized, as long as there would be some human alive.

- And what will happen when the last of us will die?

- We shall stop automatically.

- And Earth will become a ruined planet. Until somebody comes to discover that there had been a civilisation on this planet.

- But it won't happen, Jean.

- Why not?

- Because there are human duplicated. We already have a thousand five hundred fetuses and we are duplicating these fetuses.

- Were you programmed to do it?

- Yes, Jean, you programmed us yourself. The original cells were yours.

- How did I do it?

- You discovered that ultraviolet light stimulates duplication in the cells. We shoot the cells with canons of ultraviolet light and cells multiply at the moment.

- Why did you never tell me that before?

- Yo ask me the same question every day, Jean.

And Jean continued his walk near the sea, happy to know that humankind would go on.

Two years later, Jean died.

A thousand five hundred children ran through the streets of Marseilles, under robotic watch. Others thousands were coming and some were doing their first steps. More than ten thousands of fetuses were developping.

Marseilles received a visit by two human survivors. Marcus, aged 209, and Anna, aged 215. They were very happy to see new humans running again on the planet.

- We are real plagues on this world. - told Marcus.

- Finally we discover what we are on Earth for. To survive. - answered Anna.

  • HAHAHAHA! That's a lot of fun! And kind of scarey! It probably looks and sounds exactly like that, when the pod-people are being made!
