My grandfather's grandfather sang this song (South Carolina). The words are the same, the tempo faster. Song refers to joining the Church (Baptist). You put a white cloth on your head, no one talks to you (out of respect) b/c you are in constant prayer & fast. When you have a sign, you tell a leader in the church. A committee of leaders is formed. Then you literally go out into the "wilderness" (cotton, corn fields, etc) & pray. When you get a sign, committee agrees you may be baptized.

Thank you so much for your comments. I shall certainly add these to my stage performance and pass this along to Tony Norris as well.
