John Francis speaks about his experience with formal and informal environmental education, discussing his interest in oil spills, his seventeen year vow of silence, his journey across the country on foot, and the education he received along the way. Francis presents the conclusions he reached at the end of his journey, highlighting the idea that environmentalists should be concerned, not only with natural problems and processes, but also with human and societal ones. Presentation at "Satyagraha: Gandhi's 'Truth Force' in the Age of Climate Change" presented by the Garrison Institute on April 13, 2008 at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.
