Bipolar disorder is a seriously debilitating
psychiatric disorder that affects patients as well as their family members and friends. According to the World Health Organization, bipolar disorder is one of the most frequently occurring mental disorders worldwide. Acute mania and mixed episodes of mania can have devastating effects on an individual's life, although proper diagnosis and early treatment can usually alter the course of the illness. Nonetheless, many people with bipolar disorder, particularly mixed mania, remain misdiagnosed and mistreated. This program will discuss the differences between acute manic and mixed episodes in patients with bipolar disorder, explain proper dosing and the advantages of different dosage formulations, and identify the rationale for monotherapy and combination therapy in these patient populations.
