Tetrazzini recorded this aria several times and sang it frequently in her recitals (at which time she once cracked on the final high E and returned to the stage to sing it properly), as well as performing the role of Lakme in the opera house. Her recordings of the aria are much praised although I find the accelerated staccati somewhat comical. Regardless, the dramatic atmosphere she creates and her pure tone, legato singing, and technical acrobatics are a joy.
Re-reading my previous comment, I realize I was referring to the Bell Song, not the first-act aria. Both are wonderfully sung, however.

It's hard to imagine what she could have looked like as Lakmé!
Never mind: her plush legato on all latitudes and super brilliant, super clean martellato—not just pecking, but the real thing—are something else.
