A decade ago, after an epiphany at a New York restaurant, Richard Ogust began dedicating his time and resources to rescuing endangered turtles — confiscating hundreds bound for Southeast Asian food markets. When the filmmakers catch up with the 50-year-old writer, he is sharing his Manhattan loft with 1,200 turtles, including five species extinct in the wild. But his growing "ark" and preservation efforts are threatening to exhaust him, both mentally and financially. With luminous images and a haunting musical score, "The Chances of the World Changing," airing on PBS's P.O.V. series on July 17, 2007, documents two years in the life of a man who finds himself struggling to save hundreds of lives, including his own.

  • @DjDapperDon thanks for replying, sorry things haven't worked out, i hope things improve. sincere regards to him and yourself : )

  • @RayDandy No he isnt right now, it just got way too much for him. Very heartbreaking. I am hoping to do something in the future for both of us. He is a very kind person, just got so overwhelmed.

  • @DjDapperDon how is richard doing? Is he still involved in conservation?

  • It is with great honor to say I know this man personally. He is one of the most dedicated turtle people out there.

  • Respectfully, I think it's sad that we live in a time when earnestness comes across as "spacey, possibly stoned." Perhaps if we as wannabe-"progressives" were more humble and willing to accept that humans quite don't know what they need, we could starting healing the world. While we're writing YouTube comments chafing at Richard's "petty" cause, he's the one doggedly pursuing the "environmental question," regardless of the non-Hollywood outcome. The EPA and enviro groups are not "on it."

  • As a progressive searching for more information on Worldchanging I stumbled upon the above. I have to say that the speaker comes across as, flaky, spacey, possibly stoned -everything modern progressives dont need. Give us substance and clarity. This kind of petty, private cause of a millionaire actually takes away from the environmental question he's concerned with.
