In August 2006, the Probo Koala ship, chartered by the oil-trading company Trafigura, dumped caustic soda and petroleum residues on trash dumps in Abidjan. The result was radical: Ivory Coast authorities said 17 people were killed, and more than 100,000 forced to seek medical help. In a landmark ruling in September, the company agreed to pay 30 million pounds to more than 30,000 claimants in a class-action suit. But the victims are still awaiting compensation.
