JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750)

Sonata for violin and basso continuo in E minor BWV1023

1. [Prelude]

2. Adagio ma non tanto

Performed by Helene Schmitt, violin
Alain Gervreau, cello
Jan Willem Jansen, harpsichord

*This particular sonata is of doubtful authenticity, though I myself think that this is more likely to be authentic than it's sister doubtful sonatas for violin and continuo. However, we only have one unsigned copy and the choice of movements is rather odd.

Interestingly, like it's sister sonata BWV1021, this piece is a pure lesson in continuo writing. THe figuring is extremely detailed, to the point of being almost a tablature, leaving the player little leeway.

  • the beginning of tempo little bit slow and after while more fast more than usual why?!

  • It's a fantasia essentially, so the tempo is quite flexible.

  • could it be that Bach's contribution to the music is precisely the continuo 'arrangement' - if the violin part (which doesn't resemble any other Bach) had been written already by some Italian?

  • See, I think the other movements besides the prelude sound like Bach.

  • My God...Here Bach was floating on lysurgic acid down a vision of a soon to be Canalletto canvas. This has no Bach language...at all.

Much closer to Matteis or Vivaldi. This performance is beautifully intimate.Helene Schmitt must be a goddess, who stayed ouf of conservatory.

  • I love Helene Schmitt. Her playing is tauching!

  • can anyone explain to me what the first 1:15 represent versus the entire piece, total novice here, i just love that beginning, but then it totally change composition?

  • @michaelmartind

he's either quoiting the Senior Biber or a pure Stylus Fantasticus coincidence ... a friend posted it on his facebuk and i have the same reaction with the preludio ... :-)

  • ein bisschen traurige Melodie, aber schön^^

  • Sublime, dionisico.........che pace!!!!!

  • this is some of the sexiest classical music I have ever heard. awesome

  • I talk here about the performance and violist it looks he play alone far away from harpsichord player in a way there's no match between each other no connect until after while

  • The opening prelude sounds very Biber-like.
