Nice capture of the aurora. What shutter speed did you use to take the pictures?

How often is that Aurora Borealis there? Like always or just sometimes? So cool. Love it.. the quality is fine imo.. why didn't you just take a video and speed it up? ALso how'd you get all those stars to show? Is it just a desolate place with lots of stars showing (the photo at the end) did you leave the shutter open for awhile or?

@alastreana It is almost a nightly occurrence where I live right now. At the moment we have too much daylight to get many good displays, but you can still detect them. It depends on solar activity, which we have had a lot of lately. There are some camera systems that are sensitive enough to videotape aurora activity, but my own gear cannot get bright enough at 1/30 of a second (minimum speed for 5D II video). We have little to no light pollution, so great star fields are visible

@alastreana especially with longer shutter lengths. I have more experimenting to do. I've yet to see a video (not a lapse) sensitive enough to show brightly exposed star fields, which is one of the reasons I choose to do lapses.

looks amazing, even if the quality isn't great
do you do this by just taking lots and lots of long exposure shots? Around how many goes into making a video like this?

@tagirocks Hey! Thank you :) Yes, normally I would shoot this with a cable release with an interval between frames of my choosing. All but one of these clips was shot manually, and that really accounts for the loss in quality - manually pressing the shutter button 400+ times gets tiresome! There are around 900 frames included in this video, I will have to get an exact count :)
