A return visit, forty years later to the camp ground, Walden Woods in northern Indiana. Grandpa A. once owned a lot there, and we all share our own fond memories of summer's camping there.

  • I am one of the Crawfords. Some of my fondest memories come from Walden Woods. I remember the raft, and the mucky bottom. The hay rides on the flat trailer behind the tractor. A bunch of us kids used to do a day hike to Lake Gage and back. Do you remember the little store there? My dad would take us down the Fawn River for an all day floating fishing trip. We'd catch a load of fish and filet them up to cook around the campfire. My family had a pop up camper just across from the Avery deck.

  • Great memories! The mini-bikes were the big rage although we didn't own one, we were always hoping to hitch a ride on one. I once caught a turtle while fishing in Lake Concord [Lake Sally Owen], but few fish. We would head out to the canal section of the Lake after dark to 'gig for frogs.' Never did catch any. And I remember buying candy from the main store/bathhouse at the top of the hill across the lake.

  • wow! We had a lot right across from your deck! I remember playing on it. Do you remember the Crawford or Harris kids??? So many happy days, and good memories....We were the ones who put the 1st ducks on the lake, they were white...Walden Woods helped shape who I am today! Thanks so much :)

  • Crawfords? I seem to remember that name! However, its been nearly 40 years, so that's not saying alot. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the old campground again -- it was a different place back then, but fond to remember. No minibikes allowed now, but back then they were the big thing.

  • That place has really held it's own in time. Apparently they weren't too strict on the building codes there.... half cabin/half trailer? Looks like some of the same trailers I saw there in 1968.

  • Kurt - way to go!

Really brings back the memories of that place.

Of course now it seems that it has become more of a "squatters" camp. At least some of the older trailers and campsites appear unkempt.
