You're watching the official 2012 Hands-Only CPR instructional video from the American Heart Association http://www.heart.org/handsonlycpr. Learn how to perform CPR in this 60-second video showing Hands-Only CPR in action.
Remember, if you see a teen or adult collapse, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic Bee Gees' song "Stayin' Alive." The American Heart Association's Hands-Only CPR at this beat can more than double or triple a person's chances of survival.

Actually checking the pulse is obsolete. Airway is more important. Think about a situation where the victim just collapsed. If he isn't breathing (brain-damage, aspiration etc.) he might still have a pulse for some time but due to the o2 insufficiency not for long. Additionally, it takes at least 10 seconds to evaluate the pulse properly (my experience as a paramedic). Time that someone with no medical training should spent on cpr ;)

Because you can't show REAL CPR unless it's actually being used. The animation allows for the model to show a deep compression (you should aim for 2").

According to the class I'm taking, it was because the time taken to do the rescue breaths allows the blood pressure to drop dangerously and survival rates were higher in hands-only CPR groups than combined CPR + rescue breath groups.

I am an American Heart BLS instructor and the head tilt / chin lift has been removed for lay rescuers as well. The main reason is that most non-medical professions don't know the signs of neck and spine injury and were often causing more damage to these areas. Under the current hands only method with the added benefit of the AED the survival rate is now up to 45% which is the highest it has ever been.

The point of hands-only cpr is for those who have no medical training. They only have them do breaths if you have a barrier.

because the lay person is usually stressed and feeling for pulse can be difficult and they do not always have the right technique, feeling for pulses is even difficult for trained personnel.
