Lensky's aria from Eugene Onegin "kuda vy udalilis" sung it Italian.
from a live concert in Chicago. cir 1962
Sorry the sound isn't so good.
As far as I know he never recorded this in a studio so this is kinda Rare.
Selections from this broadcast are not presented as a definitive record of Mr. Di Stefanos art. This was a broadcast from late in his career when his
voice was well past its prime. I present this
only as a record of one of his later concerts.
I agree that it is certainly not his best singing.
However we can still hear something of his
style and there are moments when it is still
quite moving and there is quite an impressive use of dynamics.
What cannot be captured on these or any recording
is Di Stefanos great Presence on stage and his immediate and sometimes intimate report with an audience. Needless to say it takes more than a great voice to make a great artist

  • I have added additional notes to the "info"

section in response to some of these comments

  • I will, so far no luck. I learned the first four lines in Russian, but it is a very long song... .if you have an Italian text, can you send it to me?

  • As I said I've seen it but I'm sorry I don't have it

I saw it when I was studying in Italy but I eventually decided it was better to learn it in Russian.

  • This is superb! This is such a great modern song, its so psychlogical, introspective. And to have it Italian. . . The Russian is so hard to remember.

where ccan I find the Italian text written out?

  • I have seen other Italian translations but not this one. I don't know where you can find it. If you ever do please let me know.

  • Is there a full CD of that recital? Can't wait to find out.

  • As far as I know there is no commercial CD available. This is from my private collection

  • I heard this arioso registered for the RAI, di Stefano was young, in his best voice.

  • @MrKonstantin1000

  • normally i hate russian arias sung in any other language, but anything Pippo did became art

  • why, why in italian Pippo????!!!!! is Tchaikovsky...

anyhow, i'll love your voice forever..

  • Tape warble is a problem. Sounds "better" because Italian is more lyrical than Russian. If only Russians knew this they would all start speaking it. (That's sarcasm, son.) Seriously, very fine.

  • @mamaanya I would say it depends of who is singing ;) Just imagine a Russian tenor singing this aria in Italian :))) Di Stefano is unique, no matter what he singing and in what language, he is always speaking from his heart. But Lemeshev still remains for me the best Lensky of all times. Despite he sing is in Russian ;)

  • @GermanOperaSinger -I'd even say on a par with Gigli.
