BR Class 8P Pacific, 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' hauling 'The Midland Tornado' 1Z72 on the 26th July 2010.

It's in fine form here as it passes Souldrop on the slow line of the Midland Mainline, with plenty of speed, steam and whistling late in the evening. Banking assistance is seen in the form of Class 66, 66050 'EWS Energy' from the rear of the train, ruining the shot. The tour ran from London Victoria to Gloucester diesal hauled, and then with steam incharge ran from Gloucester to Birmingham, the Lickey Incline, Nuneaton, Leicester, Melton Mowbray, Kettering, Bedford and then finally London Waterloo.

Thanks for the comment. The engine certainly complemented the surroundings brilliantly.

  • Great video - great location! We saw it at Wellingborough, just a few miles north of this spot. When we saw it, the class 66 was definitely turned off, just dead in train, so not providing any banking assistance, just another 100 tons for the Duke to haul! I guess it was just there for insurance and for when they need to reverse the train. Don't know if they used it on Lickey - hope not!

Cheers. I like this location for filming trains on the MML. And the Duke fitted in perfectly to the scene, wish I was around when steamers were common place. The 66 was completely out of place though. They did use the 66 on the Lickey, but it took away a lot of drama from the engine unfortunately.

  • Great Video, 5 Stars! I saw her at Harpenden.
