10 April 2010 - The New Zealand Shearing Championships in Te Kuiti is one of two major shearing events in the country. (The other is the Golden Shears.) Professional shearers and woolhandlers from all over New Zealand compete for places on the national team and other NZ teams, which compete in places like Wales and Australia. It's amazing to watch the grace, strength and agility exhibited by these men and women as they work.
Featuring excerpts from the 2010 NZ vs. Wales Test, Open Woollhandling, and Circuit Finals. In the Circuit Finals, the participants shear 15 sheep - 5 merinos, 5 ewes and 5 lambs. The merinos are the greyer ones with the wool that sticks together. I've focused here on local favorite James Fagan and Napier man Dion King... mostly because I could see them best.
Shot with my tiny digital still camera, so apologies for any shaky footage.
