CHEN:
Originally launched on the 13th of July, the Canadian Tibet Committee started a campaign called the "Race for Rights." Canadian David Kay dipped his bike into the Atlantic Ocean to kick off his 7,700 km bike ride across Canada.
STORY:
David Kay, former Team Canada member and Pan American medalist is taking on an independent cycling route across Canada to garner attention towards the little action China has taken under their promise to improve their human rights situation for the Olympics.
One of Kay's inspirations come from the Dalai Lama speech in Ottawa - compassion and non-violence. Kay is an avid cyclist and accomplished rower.
[David Kay, Former Team Canada Member]:
"The timing of it is pretty key, China made a commitment in 2001 to improve its human rights record in order to receive the Olympics, to host the Olympics. It hasn't
done that and in fact we have seen a reverse in democratic freedoms and rights not only for Tibetans, but for Falun Gong practitioners, for political dissidents, for journalist, for aids activists."
His strong record in championing social and environmental justice includes his membership in committees including the Kingston Environmental Advisory Forum, and the role of Athlete Ambassador for Right to Play.
[Mrs. Kay, David Kay's Mother]:
"I just admire his idealism and his positive spirit and his attitude is that if one person takes notice then he's accomplished something."
[Wayne Kay, David Kay's Father]:
"It's quite amazing that he's able to get up every morning and do another hundred miles."
Kay's journey continues as he bikes 200 kilometers a day and tents on the road at night for a total of 42 days. He expects to reach his destination during the closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics.
