Meeting with The Filipino Community
Japan Education Center, Tokyo
25 September 2011
President Benigno S. Aquino III met with hundreds of members of the Filipino community in Japan shortly after his arrival in Tokyo for a four-day official working visit in the country.
In his speech, President Aquino said that the visit is to strengthen primarily the economic cooperation and friendly ties between Philippines and Japan and this will be realized when he meets Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and several Japanese business leaders. The President also said that one of the good news for them is the remittance tie-up between LandBank of the Philippines and Japan Post Bank that was formally launched in January.
The tie-up lowers the cost of remittance charges for Filipinos sending money to their loved ones back home. He then requested to Filipinos working in Japan to be always honourable and responsible for they all serve as Ambassadors of the Philippines. He hailed the talent and skill of more than 70 design engineers working for Japan Gas Corporation in Tokyo.
The President viewed an audiovisual presentation, prepared by the Philippine Embassy and the Filipino community, on the assistance extended to the victims of the March 11 Sendai Earthquake and Tsunami. The program also featured a presentation of cultural dances by Filipino-Japanese children and a gift box of 'tanzaku' (paper strips) to the President. The box contained the written aspirations and wishes of Filipino-Japanese children for President Aquino and their hopes for the multicultural world they live in.
According to Ambassador Manuel Lopez, there are more than 220,000 Filipinos residing and making a living in Japan.
