This song comes from the Great Depression era and is sung by Bing Crosby. We are currently in an economic crisis, largely fueled by the Republican regime. Although this song was written in 1932, many of the lyrics are applicable today!

Music by: Jay Gorney
Lyrics by: Yip Harburg

They used to tell me I was building a dream
And so I followed the mob.
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear,
I was always there, right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream
With peace and glory ahead --
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once I built a tower, up to the sun,
brick and rivet and lime.
Once I built a tower, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee, we looked swell
Full of that Yankee Doodle-de-dum.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell,
And I was the kid with the drum.

Say, don't you remember they called me Al,
It was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal --
Say, buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, ah, gee, we looked swell
Full of that Yankee Doodle-de-dum.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell,
And I was the kid with the drum.

Say, don't you remember they called me Al,
It was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal --
Buddy, can you spare a dime?

  • Why would there be a civil war? Are you saying you would rather treat the majority of your fellow citizens as enemies when they democratically elect a president you dont agree with? Dont you see how unpatriotic you trully sound by saying such ridiculous things?

  • Party that destroyed the country is asking to be re-elected so it can fix it. Please dont let these guys win. Forget the campaign crap and all that non sense and as the video says do not forget the last eight years

  • Waste of time - completely out of context, especially viewing this on 4-24-10 ..... There's even a hint of 9/11 Conspiracy theory mixed into this video.

  • Jingoistic? Oh please!!!! "Hope"! "Change!" "Change we can believe in!".........real deep?....real substance?.......The pot calling the kettle black!

Pre-Bush economy boom: thanks to the first GOP House ('94) since 1954 - 40 years! The Dem House = monolith.

And stop crying. To quote Don Corleone: "

act like a man!" (see YouTube video - "godfather - act like man")

  • democrats are more responsible for the banking mess. barney frank and chris dodd were supposed to be the watchdogs, but did they do their jobs? no - and why not? barney's gay lover is on the board of fannie mae and chris got himself a sweetheart "executive" loan from a bank under investigation (name escapes me, sorry).

  • No matter... we all have to start looking up depression era recipes on the internet. Try Great Depression recipes. Moms, start making your own vegetable gardens and putting away preserves. Luckily, I was raised with a grandmother who lived those days and never forgot them. I learned alot from her and grandpa too. with people loosing their jobs there wil be more time to hunt and fish. $100.00 will not feed a family of five 3 squares.

  • good stuff great song to.

  • Why I even mention "Civil War" is because others mentioned it in prior threads. The only thing I stated was that this election was bringing out the worst in everyone. And by the posts from BOTH SIDES, I feel that divisiveness is still very apparent just as I predicted. I sense that it is nastier this election than other elections, but you have a right to your opinion. True, I am no Obama fan, and nice to see that he is seeking some bipartisanship, now that the election is over.

  • We won, I even cried a bit during Obama's victory speech when he reminded all of us that this is a progressive nation. However, I'd give it back to have the pre-Bush economy again. I'd give it back to not have had Bush and his cronies spending 8 years tearing America up with incompetence, malfeasance, and misrule. It's impossible to turn back time so now we have Obama to show you jingoistic Republicans what America really stands for.

  • Civil War? I don't suppose you are a student of American history. Do you remember the elections in 2000 and 2004? Karl Rove employed a 50+1% victory strategy and won by exploiting division and malice. Obama won by our maneuvering his opponents on the ground, and the nastiest thing he did to Senator McCain was to associate him with our sitting president.
