At one time parts of America used to be like Japan in terms of crime and theft. I'm sorry those days are gone. You don't know how sorry I am, and how I am at odds with my own country and the people I live with.

All of this is true, Japan is in unbelievably safe to people and property. In my first visit in 1984 I got separated from my backpack on the bus from Narita. It arrived at Tokyo Station a good 30 minutes before me. When I finally arrived I was distraught at losing my pack but I looked up the street and saw it just sitting on a bench seat where the bus driver had left it 30 minutes earlier. It was morning rush hour and thousands of commuters would have walked past it. Made a big impression on me.
