Designer Nate Berkus says he knew from the time he was 8 or 9 that he was gay, but he didn't come out to his family until he was in college. In fact, Nate says, his stepfather found out before he even told him. Watch as Nate opens up about that conversation with his stepfather and how his mother reacted. Plus, Nate offers advice to people who want to come out and to their families.

    er I dont agree with much of what Nate says here.

    The only reason it was such a shock to his mom was that he tried to hide his homosexuality for so long and actually pretended to be straight.

    Many gay people dont pretend and a lot of the time parents are already suspicious so its not really that they need time to process and grieve as its simply confirmation about something they already knew which is a lot easier to accept.
