In this video, Mike from TechneekTV.com shows you how to enable AHCI post-installation of Windows 7/Vista.

Normally enabling AHCI in the BIOS without preparing Windows beforehand will cause a Blue Screen of Death to occur when you are rebooting your computer. Follow these steps and you'll have AHCI enabled safely and quickly.

Why would you want to use AHCI? For these benefits:
-Native Command Queing: More efficient hard drive usage.
-Ability to HotSwap: Hard drives can be removed without powering down the PC.
-RAID Support: The PC will be able to utilize a RAID setup.
-TRIM Support for Solid State Disks: SSD's will utilize a TRIM algorithm to increase their speed and longevity.
-Better power efficiency.

  • Someone please tell me in simple terms the difference between ide, RAID and AHCI. I checked my system bios and by default it was set at AHCI. I intend to install an SSD soon, should I keep it at AHCI or switch to another or disable it completely? Also I will be having a 500gb drive running for storage, does this affect anything?

  • @yazoo178 AHCI lets the motherboard and SATA controller take advantage of newer technology in SATA drives that IDE drives don't have. You should see a slight performance increase as well as cooler/more efficient drive operation with AHCI enabled. AHCI is required for RAID, as well. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Indifferent Disks... basically you can do RAID 0 for enhanced speed, RAID 1 for backup, etc. You shouldn't worry about IDE because it is an old technology.

  • You sound like a robot..

  • Will I be able to use my old IDE drives if I enable AHCI??

  • Guy, when in regedit (or anything else for that matter) you can start typing the characters to "snap" to the folder then press the right arrow. In this case, click on "HKLM" then sys > curr > ser > msa...

  • Recently discovered that when I reinstalled my computer and also reset my BIOS, I forgot to enable AHCI. I have tried this method and it simply doesn't work for me. All I get is a black screen when I try to boot.

I will soon reinstall my computer again, but I'd like to have AHCI for now.

  • I did the step but when I reboot and went into bios I couldn't find the Configure sata tab in my bios?

  • lol sorry i just watched the video again and u say it normally reads as "1" so doesnt mean it wont read as 2 or 3 etc etc.... thank u for a great video tutorial :)

  • if it shows as "Value data: 3" do i still change it to "0" to enable AHCI mode? Just want to make sure cos its not on "1"

  • It worked !! thanks !!

  • @wilkmn keep RAID mode on :)
