@sstrumello Just curious, why isn't natural pork & beef insulin coved by the "Orphan Drug Act", since even Eli Lilly stated that rDNA synthetic human insulin wouldn't work for all diabetics. It seems unjust for American diabetics to have to import the natural pork & beef insulin from Europe & Canada. American diabetics are suffering unnecessarily, because of this situation. I call it death by deception. Why is profit more important than people's health & quality of life?

Pork (natural) insulin isn't perfect. It does work much better than Humulin (not human) insulin. Humulin hits very fast and hard with no duration. What were they thinking? This is a very dangerous product. I've had diabetes for 36 years and can't believe they quit producing the natural insulin. I import pork from Canada and I am very happy it is available. Eli Lilly doesn't care about people with diabetes just the profits.
deanjean71 is right. Cloned insulin is a defective product. In Eli Lilly's cloned insulin's phase 2 clinical trials in England in 1982, there was a 30% adverse reaction rate. But Eli Lilly covered that percentage up and had their own doctors report a 2 to 3% adverse reaction rate. Again, Eli Lilly wanted to raise the price of insulin and couldn't do so unless they "improved" it. But cloned insulin IS NOT an improvement, just another defective product from Eli Lilly.

GE insulin relies as heavily on animal-sourced components as does insulin sourced directly from abbatoir animals. According docs on file with the EMEA, Novo Nordisk & Lilly use several animal derived raw materials are used in the production of several rDNA origin synthetic insulins. These include peptone, beef extract & pepticase used in the prep and storage cell banks, & L-threonine & trypsin used in the purification process to convert human insulin precursor to human insulin methyl ester.
