I used a triangle wave to fade through red, green and blue lights recreating the visible spectrum. This ended up being about 100x more difficult than I had imagined since colors are defined in a non-linear way using a single byte that is formatted RRRGGGBB. It seems so easy in Photoshop!

I have also learned that I know essentially nothing about this level of color theory and I suspect to properly model color using code you would have to think three dimensionally.
