The incredible edible egg. A Chefs best friend. Chickens in my opinion are essential to going off grid.

  • Was that a turkey I see at 8:44? I was curious what is done to "sanitize" the egg before cracking it open in a frying pan, or is it even necessary? I just converted my (unused for 25 years) gazebo into a chicken coop. Worked out great, now I need to purchase the "Pullets". Thanks for the vid.

  • @HOLLYWOODILLUSION yes, that was a turkey. Great job on the gazebo... You can buy full grown laying hens. around my neck of the woods, they are about $20 each. I am not a sanitary freak.. I don't mind cracking a dirty egg... but if it bothers you or you have young kids or elderly people, u might want to rinse them with warm water prior to cracking.

  • Great job!!! I am going to get chickens this next year, we just moved into our WROL location and need to make other adjustments first!! Do you recommend raising from chicks or finding full grown chickens right off the bat??? Thanks for all the great info!!

  • @ltbaldwin I would do both. buy some laying hens to produce eggs right away and hatch some of those eggs under a heat lamp. Good luck and let me know how it works out. Please be sure to subscribe to my channel. thanks

  • Great information!

  • Wow, great video. Chock full of information. Thanks.

  • I think Chickens are great and yes I agree, Eggs are used in so many different ways of cooking... and you can preserve it as well. But yes Im a Vego these days.... so theres no cooking Chickens around here. Cheers was a cool Vid and have to say when I was listening to it my funny Roastors started crowing and came up to under my window, once I stopped the Vid for a second they stopped, so I tried this a couple of times, and had a great laugh, cheers again for you vid.

  • WIll chickens/roosters survive in a forest such as is here in New Zealand which I think doesnt have any natural predators?

  • Wow! Really great information. Thank you.

  • i purchased twenty chicks from my local feed store and wound up with 19 hens and i rooster they are rhode island reds and they lay between 16 and 18 eggs a day i only have had 1 die in almost two years and i see no letting up in egg production and i figure if i do i'll hatch out a new flock and make chicken and dumplings and chicken and rice with the rest a win win proposition

  • @HOLLYWOODILLUSION I've owned Plenty of chickens in my life. I even know how to out-cross breed them for eggs and meat.

If you have chickens, then you would know that chicken poop on eggs drys off and will come off easy.

Here's some advise from the book. DON'T WASH EGGS, because the bacteria will absorb inside. So in your case you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

Once again, my helpful response was to COOK them and not eat them raw. You'll live.

  • @thegreatwoodlife Well thank you for such brilliant advice. Obviously you don't own any chickens, otherwise you would know that they are poop machines. They poop where they sleep, they poop in the egg nest (and on the eggs). So if you want to just crack open an egg over the pan (with poop on it), be my guest. I wash them first.

  • I'm currently setting up my BOL with chickens. They get rid of ticks, flys, grasshoppers, spiders, crickets and just about anything you don't want. I love em.

  • @HOLLYWOODILLUSION Here's how you Sanitize an egg. Crank the heat up on a pan, crack the egg and fry it up. Now it's sanatized.
