Good video Bev. I agree with you, it's dangerous to claim that autistic people have no feelings. My son certainly has feelings and is very adept at expressing them. Some feelings he expresses in non-typical ways, but a bit of thought from those around him can ensure they understand him better.

I remember when my friend told me she was moving to australia (I am in the UK) and I didn't really react at all. The tutor was with us as she said it and she explained to my friend (who hasn't got Autism) that it didn't mean I didn't care, its just that it would take a while to process. She was right. A few hours after my friend left I was crying and then I threw up which has never happened before (from emotions). Good video :)

I have HFA and I notice that all the people who claim I never express empathy, never express empathy twoards me.

@orkneymist I am not saying that autistics lack empathy, all I am saying is that it is a very complex emotion that may have different forms. I know that I do not immediately feel it over another's minor pain, yet when it comes to general suffering, I can certainly relate and even cry. Also, many autistics get very angry when they see other autistics being abused by their peers, which is definitely an example of autistic empathy.

1. Lacking empathy is an inherent trait of sociopathy, not autism. An autistic person who is aware of the situation may very well have empathy. And many certainly do not lack the ability to have it.

Thanks for making this video NTs and even some other Atypical people need to get a grip with reality because we aren't all the same we all function differently because we are all wired up uniquely and this unique wiring results in everyone's reactions to the world being different and those different reactions are not necessarily bad just because they are atypical reactions.

Whether or not autistics have empathy seems to raise some controversy:

1. Autistics may have sympathy, but do not have a good idea of what a person is thinking, so they do lack empathy

2. Autistics only have empathy for other autistics

3. Autistics can only empathize if they have gone through a particular situation themselves
