Adventure Time is an animated cartoon created by Pendleton Ward. It aired as one of Nickelodeon's Random! Cartoons (produced by Frederator Studios, executive producer Fred Seibert). The first screening was January 10, 2007 and was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject of 2006.[1] However, the short was leaked onto the internet in 2006, over two years before it would appear on television. Some of the music included in the cartoon incorporates the MOS Technology SID sound processing chip of the Commodore 64[citation needed]. The show includes many silly or mathematical outbursts, such as "Rhombus!", "Algebraic!" and "He's such a patoot". The short was recently picked up for a series by Cartoon Network.
Adventure Time focuses on the brief quest undertaken by Pen, a twelve year old boy characterized by his strange white hat, and his friend Jake, a twenty-eight year old dog with magical powers. The cartoon begins with Pen sleeping under a tree and Jake meditating. After a short conversation, Princess Bubblegum's Rainicorn (a cross between a unicorn and a rainbow) flies by in tears. The two follow the Rainicorn in an attempt to cheer it up, but find that the princess is imprisoned in the Ice Kingdom by the Ice King. Using snowballs, they battle their way past the Iceclops, Snow Golem, and Fire Elemental, monsters that inhabit the snow kingdom (although the Fire Elemental just wanted directions to the sun).
Eventually, Pen and Jake make their way to the Ice King's mountain lair. Pen and the Ice King begin an epic kung fu battle. Meanwhile, Jake remains outside flirting with the Rainicorn, ignoring the battle. Just when Pen seems to be gaining the upper hand, the Ice King uses his "ice lightning" to freeze Pen in a block of ice. For unexplained reasons, this transports Pen's mind "back in time, and to Mars" where he has a short motivational conversation with Abraham Lincoln. After being told to believe in himself, Pen is returned to the present just in time to see the Ice King beginning to fly away with Princess Bubblegum. Chasing after him using Jake's extensible legs, Pen rescues the princess from the Ice King's grasp and Jake simply pushes the magical crown off of the King's head, thereby removing the King's source of power. The Ice King then plummets off screen yelling a long list of complex threats of things he will do when he returns.
The cartoon closes with the princess giving Pen a kiss, which embarrasses Pen greatly. He attempts to leave, but Jake claims that they have nowhere else to go, and that there are no adventures that need them. Luckily, some nearby ninjas are stealing an old man's diamonds, and they both run off in pursuit, ending the cartoon.

This is the first cartoon to ever use a sound chip from a famous computer or game system for the music! Someday, I hope someone uses the KONAMI SCC chip or the YM-2612 chip for cartoons.
