China has an estimated 22 million Muslims - about two percent of the population. They are expected to unite with more than one billion Muslims across the world to observe the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.

This is Niujie, the biggest of the capital's 73 mosques and the spiritual center of a large community of Muslims living in the surrounding district of Xuanwu.

In addition to being Beijing's largest mosque, Niujie is also the city's oldest. Muslims have been celebrating Ramadan at a place of worship on the same site for more than 1,000 years.

At the end of the first fasting day, men and women gathered to perform the month's first evening prayer. After worship, they broke their day-long fast together with an "iftar" meal.

As well as fasting, during Ramadan Muslims are expected to strengthen their character through self-restraint, charitable-giving and introspection.

Although officially an atheist country, China has a growing population of believers.
