As if 3 Cars weren't enough, the Green Line now has approval to run 4 car trains as far as Park Street. As of April 2011, these only run during Red Sox games between Kenmore and Park Street. Approval for full length runs (Riverside to Park) is still under consideration.

  • What's the deal re:Type 8s and 3 or 4 car trains? Do they not play nice?

  • @Pyroechidna1 Type 8's are only required on 3 or 4 trains for accessibility reasons. Type 8's have a notorious reputation for derailments and breakdowns. That's why the MBTA must keep the Type 7's in service to pilot the 3 and 4 car trains. If you've ever noticed, the Type 8 is always in the middle of a 3 car train so they can have a more positive look at the situation if one of the Type 7's were to break down.

  • @2012alexg After doing some research, I found that the 7-8-7 sandwich is the preferred 3-car train arrangement because Type 7s can carry 269 passengers at crush capacity (1.5 sq. ft. per passenger) while Type 8s can only carry 196. The Type 8 is in the middle of the train so that it's equidistant from wheelchair users on either end of the platform, rather than for breakdown-related reasons. So a 7-8-7 sandwich is the optimum mix of capacity and accessibility.

  • @Pyroechidna1 Well, this is the info the General Manager and light rail superintendent gave me. But I would love to know where you got this information.

  • I love on the first drivers window there is a sign saying 4 car train

  • Also, 3-car Type 8 trains did exist back in the days before all of the Type 7s were modified to trainline with the 8s.

  • @2001rtm It's on the Lechmere platform.

  • @2012alexg How do you get to the Orange Line? I know there is a walkway to Downtown Crossing, but how do you get to the Walkway?

  • @2001rtm Yes, and to stall my way through the rest of the video, you can hear my "Uhhhhhhh" at the end just before it cuts to black.

  • @2012alexg Well, you can't have everything. Did she ask you?
