The process we used to weld the front diff on my 85 mk (mq) Nissan Patrol.

The front diff is an 'open' type diff, so only one wheel will spin under power.
This is undesirable for off-road driving as you want as much traction as possible.
Welding the diff is one of the cheapest options, the preferred method is generally the installation of a good LSD diff or locked diif (auto or air type are most common)

Obviously you may do it differently, but this is what we did :

Remove sway bar - more clearance
Remove drain plug - Drain oil
remove breather hose
Remove front cover
clean diff rigorously
weld spider gears together (both side of diff cage)
clean diff rigorously
Remove any splatter
Clean diff again (dirt and splatter will cause the diff to break)
Put drain plug back in
Attach diff cover with new gasket - this was cleaned and painted in the meantime.
refill with oil
reattach diff breather hose
Test

  • And now its hard a as hell to turn right?

  • @theninja001 I sold the car about 6 months back and got a different Nissan 4wd. The patrol would fight the steering and would allways want to be centered, so you would constantly have to be holding the steering wheel. If you unlocked one of the hubs it was fine.

  • what did u use to clean it for welding? wax and gress remover?

  • @harley101010101 Degreaser first, lots of it. then yes. some wax and grease remover, let it dry, did the welding. Checked all gear teeth, removed any glag, cleaned a few more times, put back together.
