Former DNC leader switches from Clinton to Obama

Hi on this Thursday, May 1, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk with today's UPI top news update.

Former Democratic leader Joe Andrew is shifting his support from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama. Andrew, who was appointed head of the Democratic National Committee by then President Bill Clinton in 1999, originally endorsed the New York Senator last year. Now he says the party must unite together to back Barack Obama. Andrew urged his fellow superdelegates to act now in their support for Obama...to prevent Republican candidate John McCain from building steam.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates reportedly wants to encourage more soldiers to seek mental healthcare. Officials say Gates will announce a plan later today, to reduce the stigma that comes with seeking mental help for post traumatic stress...and making care more readily available for service men and women. A survey conducted by the American Psychiatric Association shows 3 out of 5 of those in the military fear getting help, will have an impact on their future career.

One Hamas militant is dead and several others are injured following an Israeli air strike. The Israeli military says Nafiz Mansur was killed earlier today in Gaza. The Hamas military leader was apparently responsible for the 2006 kidnapping of an Israeli soldier and also involved in other attacks against Israel. Three other people were reportedly injured in the strike.

One very special science teacher was honored yesterday with the 2008 teacher of the year award. President Bush and Education Secretary Margaret Spellings presented the honor to Michael Geisen, a middle school teacher from Oregon. Geisen is apparently known as the teacher that makes learning fun. Bush thanked the teacher for "making America a more hopeful place."

Why, as an Illinois state Senator, did Obama vote "present" over 130 times instead of "yes" or "no" on difficult issues like abortion, crime, and guns? On fiscal responsibility, how does Obama intend to pay for over $660 billion in his new spending proposals and whether he can do it without raising taxes on families and small businesses? Why did Obama vote against funding for our troops after promising not to use them as pawns in a war funding debate?

Joe Andrew says he is inspired by Barack Obama. Sure he is. His act of betrayal is the proof.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Obama belongs to a church which endorses the BLACK VALUE SYSTEM which dictates that ALL resources be spent on the BLACK community.

How comes, Obama was the only candidate who voted AGAINST the war, and now where there is a common anti war sense suddenly Hillary pops up and says "ME TOO" and is against war now?
