Cabinet Ministers Retreat

The top political leadership of the grand coalition government is headed for a 3 day retreat in Mombasa with the main agenda being to iron out differences on the contentious issues in the soon to be published draft constitution. The meeting has been timed to coincide with the gazettement and publication of the draft constitution. While most Cabinet Ministers and Assistant Ministers were already in Mombasa, President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are scheduled to leave for the coastal town later. The two principals are understood to be keen on hammering out a common position on the constitution to avoid a repeat of the fractious 2005 constitution referendum. Among other issues that the leaders will be seeking consensus on include the executive structure, representation and devolution. Here in Nairobi, the committee of experts on constitution has initiated media campaigns to sensitize the public on the contents of the draft constitution as from. Olivia Okech has that story.
