My first thought is composers set the text to their music and most put a great deal of thought to lining up vowels on high notes,word stress, meaning, etc.
My second thought is prior to the invention of supertitles or 'back of chair titles' what ever gets this glorious music to the masses is what's important -especially in less cosmopolitan areas. Just a quick response.

Gruberova- there is nothing more to say about he music. But thank God the times are over when opera productions looked like taken from scenes of "The Beauty and the Beast"...

About the production - it is my understanding that this was a tour from the Vienna Staatsoper - probably performed in a small town that did not have its opera house. A real truck & load.
