Roland EF-303 groove effects demonstration of TB303 bassline emulation mode.

This little known effects processor has a TB303 Bassline emulation mode! use the 16 sliders to program notes, velocities, Step Modes (Normal notes, Rests, Ties, and of course Slides) and gate times.

The 3 knobs at the top function as Overdrive, Cutoff and Resonance controls.

Just demoing this as I am listing it on ebay
made searchable as others may find this interesting as this unit is quite rare and little known.

Has various effect modes targeted at DJ's too, the bassline mode is the most interesting.

I clipped the control mode button by accident a few times which mutes the output.

  • doesnt really come close to a tb303

  • @Capeau Agreed, it's a nice sequencer though, very much like the old SEQ-303 software in hardware form. Do roland not realise people would pay gladly for a new 303 box and I am sure they could bring one to market very easily.

  • does EF303 have slide?? slide is key..

MC09, if programmed and played well can sound very close to the TB303,, there is 1 video of MC09 in Youtube which did it correctly.. the other MC09 vids are not close.

  • @pixusbubblejet

Even in that example which is well programmed the MC-09 accent still sounds wrong, it just doesn't affect the filter like the real thing.

  • if you could route the ef303 synth into its own effects that would be cool, this box falls short on so many things! i wonder if it could be modded?

  • @FX23 Unfortunately roland expected us to buy a second ef-303 to use the synth with effects! the MC-09 could only do this by sampling the pattern as a loop and then processing the loop via the effects. That was fun but you lose all ability to modify the sound via the synth controls while the effects are active. It puzzles me that they don't release a new box with say 4 synth parts + effects as they could have something better than the electribe MX by far.

  • Great bit of kit the EF303

It does much much more than this video demonstrates.

Obviously this video is only intended to demonstrate one aspect of the EF303 So this is by no means a criticism. Have you tried feeding a Didgeridoo through it's filter effects? gives the player a whole new palett of sounds to play with.

I'd certainly never part with mine !!

  • @303fixinpcs reason is the synthesis emulation is a bit heavier than effects, you can't afford 4 parts so easily from a unit born as an double effect unit... the proof is that you always have just 2 processings each time: alternatively DIST+303 or 303+DELAY, just as the basic effect duos of the machine.

  • Can you tweak the delay in the effects section in real-time on this puppy?

I've got the SH-32 and it allows real-time tweaking of the delay...which I think is outstanding for live situations/setups. I believe both boxes were made around the same time. Also,..Does it have a "boost" feature like the SH-32?...where it can make some earthquaking sub-bass loudness? The synth sounds, sound just like the SH-32's from what I'm hearing here. Excellent post! Thanks for uploading!

  • @pixusbubblejet awesome youtube

  • heres another good use of MC09

can the EF303 be made to sound like this?
