Furtwangler's wartime Beethoven Ninth from march 21-24 1942.
2nd movement: Molto vivace (1/2)
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

I can also upload almost any other Furtwangler performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony so if you have a preference, message me which one you want to see uploaded. The most popular one will be uploaded (first).

  • Anyone know why he went back to the beginning around 1:19?

Interesting version though a bit slow in tempo.

  • Repeat marking by Beethoven.

  • My God, that is fantastic. Didn't think anyone could beat Karajan on the 9th until now. Thanks!

  • Ah, I was the same.

  • @Invisus944 Wait until you listen to either 1951 Bavaria version or 1954 Lucerne version. I personally prefer 1951 version, but then I've seen quite a few others who liked 1954 version.

  • @brasidas7 The 1951 Bavaria is my favorite one as well. When I uploaded this recording though, there was no Bavarian tape recording of the Bayreuth concert and I think this is still a more "important" recording (it transcends individual taste better than the other ones I think).

  • Absolutely fantastic, thanks for the upload Invisus944.

Without a doubt, greatest conductor ever.

What do you get when you mix the greatest composer and greatest conductor? - Simply Perfection.

  • Definitely my favorite movement, its nice to hear a different conductor's version

Could you please upload the Bavarian version as well??I've heard it a few weeks ago and i was deeply impressed.

  • Call me a heretic if you will, but I think this is even better than the fourth movement. (Though not by too much.)

  • Thanks for the reply. Makes sense now.
