Not according to John Loudermilk, the guy who wrote the song. It's about the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears being forced onto a reservation in Oklahoma. Even though the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes were also on the Trail he centered on the Cherokee for the song which is actually titled "Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)".

I recall hearing this song when it first came out. I thought, great song because it made me think AND it had a great beat. I still get chills, today (at 55 years old), when I hear it.

The Cherokee were the only Indians that did not surrender and I am proud to be part Cherokee.

Probably because the Cherokee was one of the largest tribes on the east coast hundreds of years ago. Since the Europeans colonized the East coast first in the US, the Cherokee was who they encountered most often so there was more of a chance for them to, uh intermingle.
