The Outer Critics Circle is the organization of writers and commentators covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway. The group recently announced the nominees for this years Outer Critics Circle awards.

My favorite of the nomination this year has got to be Jessica Jahn, Michael Bottari & Ronald Case for best costume design for the kitschy and hysterical Die Mommy Die, written by and starring the lovely Charles Busch.

As for the top nominations, South Pacific picked up 8, Les Liasons Dangereuses snatched 9 and surprisingly, Young Frankenstein, a show that has received lukewarm reviews and has been struggling at the box office, leads the pack with 10.

The winners will be announced on Monday, May 12th, while the annual awards ceremony will be held Thursday, May 22th at 4PM at the legendary Sardi's Restaurant.

Information has been trickling out about Shrek: The Musical, set to premiere November 8th at the Broadway Theatre. While additional casting has been announced, a group of seasoned Broadway veterans like Jenn Cody, and her sister in law, Sutton Foster have already signed on. The title role of the green ogre will be played by Brian d'Arcy James, the singing actor recently seen in the Off-Broadway musical Next to Normal, with Cry-Baby's Chester Gregory II as Donkey and Avenue Q, Tony nominee John Tartaglia as Pinocchio.

  • I'm very suprised they would even bring Shrek to broadway. It is one of those shows that will be a giant hit, or a total flop. I guess we'll have to wait and see :)

  • Shrek is going to be spectacular on Broadway. I've seen it twich now in Seattle, once on opening preview night and just recently tonight and I also got a chance to speak with one of the producers (he was sitting behind me) as well as Jeanine Tesori for a small length of time. The music kicks Legally Blond's ass hands down and I'm really excited to see how it does on Broadway.

  • legally blond eis freakin' awesome

    end of discussion

  • This will either be the funniest musical ever, or it will be the most painful musical ever. Legally Blonde was actually really funny, and I thought it was going to be a total flop, so this could have potential to make it!
