One cutting technique I use and a little acrobatic log. I have a small chainsaw Husqvarna 346XP (which I prefer) and rarely cut these somewhat bigger trees, therefore I will not buy myself a bigger saw, instead use this cutting technique.

  • over complex and messy way to fell and unsafe (no hinge to stop the tree sliding back)

  • As a qualified tree surgeon I would beg anyone wishing to fell a tree who appreciate their lives NOT to use this method, EVER. It is complicated, your danger zones are dramatically increased and you WILL eventually kill yourself. The moment you find a problem tree e.g. leaning tree, dying tree etc. 1 of 2 things will happen 1) you will be very lucky and survive 2) you will die. Please do not think this is exaggerated, I have heard of many awful tree surgeon stories!!

  • very slow!!!

  • I just don't get it....

  • lol noob

  • not good cut

  • thats gay.. in finland we dont know how to use that thing called "chainsaw".. we just use it as normal saw and still one normal finn saws more wood in day than any other "pro forester". :)

  • @paulthewackojacko Well, I agree with the last part of your message. When I went to France I was horrified by the bizarre ways trees were felled, but they seem to work!

Boring the hinge is (from my experience) safe: no different from felling a hollow tree.

As for uploading things of YouTube; there are videos on heart surgery.... Who's daft enough to think they can do that? Well, OK, I know idiots with chainsaws....

  • @Gorteenminogue The hinge should be in tact in the felling process unless its a hung up tree in which case boring/removing part of the hinge is necessary. I guess techniques can vary between different countries etc. but this seems v. dangerous to me. I especially feel its wreckless to upload publically to youtube where any amateur with no experience could try a bit of DIY & more than likely get it wrong! If you don't have the right bar for the job, call someone! A few pennies is worth your life!

  • @paulthewackojacko Cheers for the reply.

However, there is a hinge. Each side should be at least 6" (15cm) wide, and is usually left a bit thicker than normal to compensate for the middle being missing.

The felling cut seemed over-complicated, true, (not the way I was taught) but boring the hinge is widely used in W. Europe, and very useful for getting a large tree down, especially if the top has been removed.

  • Nice cut whet the way you wanted it. And that is one way to cut down a biger tree if you don't have the right saw. It is really dangerous though which you already know. I would rather invest in a bigger bar and saw than cut like that all day; and you need to look up more. And rape you thumb around the handle!

  • @paulthewackojacko sorry didn't phrase that very well. Meant to say that if you cut through the hinge you increase the risk of the tree falling in an unsafe manner etc.
