I first discovered Barbara in 1975, and we were both so very young, while holding auditions in Chicago, arranged by Danny Leake, who I'd met the year before, in England, with his group, 100% Pure Poison. We had a number one for seven weeks on the US Disco Charts with "Twenty Four Hours A Day". In the Eighties, I got her signed to Record Shack. This song was one of the most beloved of the Record Shack classics, and Barbara's biggest pop hit in the UK. After the success of "Twenty Four Hours A Day", and her being known asone of the Queens of Disco, now she wanted to go smooth and sultry. This became a Soul Anthem in London in the 1980s, especially plugged to death by Tony Blackburn on Radio London. It gave Record Shack a new direction in 1984, moving away from High Energy into more traditional soul, and people still remember the song to this day, twenty three years later.

  • Ian, your slower soul was always superb and under-rated. SAW also produced some great soul for Haywoode, Three Degrees, Austin Howard, Princess etc.

But neither you nor they really get recognised for the quality of your work at this tempo.

    Shame.

  • Thankyou for your kind support and appreciation. Have you joined Soren's newsletter ?? (DiscoBoy1974) - The details are just a few posts below this.

  • Not yet, but I should have done. Somehow I've missed you arriving on YouTube, but am making up for lost time.

I'd be very happy if you worked some of your slower soul magic on some of those UK 80s soul ladies - Princess, Jaki Graham, Jane Eugene, Deniece Pearson, Haywoode. Maybe there's an 80s Soul 2008 to follow Northern Soul 2007 and Disco 2008?

    Just a thought.

  • Well you've got 232 videos to wade through so far, and rising.

  • Ian, Isn't this from the British version of Soul Train?

  • Yes and no. My friend Gordon Elbury, who produced and directed it, gave me extra footage that wasn't used.

  • We still spin this song here in Manila, this song is a dance floor filler!!! This song will mix well with Close To Perfection (Miguel Brown)

  • Still a crackin' tune. Remember playing out at a wedding then going on to a party afterwards where the sound had not turned up at 1am! They asked us to string up and we started playing at 2am. The first tune I dropped was this and a 3 bedroom house which was full of people exploded. Most had been there since midnight. Got 6 mths work off of that 1 night. Great days....

  • On A Crowded Street Would Be A Good Song To Street To Go Along With Disco Toothbrush , Love Scott Orvik
