Yobi, The Five-Tailed Fox

Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox (Korean: 천년여우 여우비) is a 2007 animated Korean film by Lee Seong-gang.

Difficult to impossible to find in North America, the story concerns a 100-year old kumiho (still a child in kumiho years) helping a band of aliens repair their ship so they can return to their home planet. In her adventures she meets a human boy, a shadow detective who may be more than he appears, a hunter dedicated to wiping out all kumiho, and a school for misfits that needs her help.

Yobi, the Five-Tailed Fox is a truly wonderful film steeped in Korean folklore and myth and a treat for the heart and the eyes. If you can find the DVD, the film is in Korean with English subtitles.

Am I wrong, or did I give you a copy of this a year or so back?

I do remember the film as having lovely animation, a somewhat confusing plot, and a rather tragic end. Yobi saves the aliens, saves the human boy she likes, defeats the Shadowman -- and dies! Okay, she gets reincarnated as a human, but she lost everything that made her want to become human in the first place.

One more thing about Yobi: the tails popping out was cute.

Yes, you did. Thank you. Though Yobi is a very Korean film (I think there is a law in the Korean books that no movie can be made without a sad, bittersweet ending) I know enough of the culture to enjoy the tale.
