Benjamin Franklin made experiments with "oil on the waters" in 1773. He described his results in the "letter to Mr. Brownrigg".

In his experiments at a pond at Clapham Common he most probably found the first way to measure the size of molecules by spreading them out in a monolayer. The real evaluation of it was made not until a century later.
The film is a free interpretation of the activity.
The classic experiment is often reproduced in physics lab with simple equipment on a small scale with a nanolitre of oil dosed by a microlitre droplet in a 1/1000 concentration.
The area of the monolayer will then be just 10 square centimetres, like in the film where the oildrop was introduced into he picture of the pond from a small scale experiment.
