The Melbourne rugby league Under 20s team, the Spalding Thunderbolts, won the Toyota Cup Grand Final on the same day as the Melbourne Storm seniors won against the Eels.
The Thunderbolts beat Wests Tigers in a 24-22 nailbiter on October 4, 2009, and several hours later came out on stage at Acer Arena to face thousands of jubilant Storm fans who had just witnessed Melbourne's premier rugby league teams score two trophies.
This is my video of the after party. Captain Luke Kelly and star fullback Gareth Widdop speak to the crowd. "Did you get a finger to it?" was a reference to a controversial try awarded to Storm in the dying minutes of the game, tying the scores and effectively allowing Widdop to win the game for Storm with a successful conversion.
It was a great moment for all of these boys, who are probably still out there celebrating somewhere!
CONGRATULATIONS THUNDERBOLTS!
No one can take this one away from us! The heroes of tomorrow.
