It looks like soil surround the taters...did you add any soil or compost? Any fertilizer? How did they taste?? Thanks!

@dontbelivewhatyourea: I did add a small scoop of soil, but when I took the bale apart after the growing season it pretty much ALL looked like loose soil.... it had transformed/composted itself (with a little help from urine that I added during the preceding winter). The spuds tasted great!

Yes.... apparently even a beginner like me (1st season growing veggies) can grow spuds, and even in an old bale of straw! :-)
