it would push the fireplace mantle out from the wall by whatever thickness your cleat is though, no? What if you want to mount something like that flush to the wall. This should have been mentioned in this video.

brilliant, I have large mDF paintings (I'm an artist) and have been trying for months to figure out how to mount them for exhibition - voila, genious!

One or two small screws through the mounted object into the wall cleat can lock it rigidly in place, useful for applications like coat racks where it could accidentally get knocked loose. Also, if the object has to support a lot of weight, it goes without saying you should screw the wall cleats securely to studs.

Wow! I was about to spend over $200 on fancy mounting brackets to hang sound-absorbing panels in a recording studio. This technique is so easy, and can be done (at least for my purposes) with wood scraps! Bravo!
