In 1984 New Orleans had a World's Fiar. While not a financial success, many New Orleanians have fond memories of the fair. I came across a few old photos and decided to put this together. I had to swap out the original music on this video by the Dixie Cups due to cr issues. Sad. The music now on the video is not nearly as good.

  • I think that they actually were toying with the idea of keeping it up as a way for folks to commute from the West to East Bank. No Way!

  • Thanks for posting this...brings back memories of being in the fourth grade in Marreo,LA - My school gave us free tickets to the World's fair.

  • Glad that you enjoyed it. Wish that I had more photos. This was before the days of ditital cameras.

  • For an indepth analysis of the Fair read HISTORY AND IMPACT OF 1984 LOUISIANA WORLD EXPOSITION by Peter Hagan. The original is in the Tulane Library, and there are copies at UNO Library, LSU Library and the Historic New Orleans collection.

  • Thanks for the suggestion.

  • What a blast reliving this. Thanks.

  • thank you!! I had a season pass I was 23...some of the best memories ever..I lived in Gretna and was in several mardi gras balls and parades. Bittersweet memories for me! My favorite was the gondola. Was up there when the fireworks went off many times!! Lived in Gretna...The fair was awesome!!

  • That ride is why I'm scared of heights today !!

My cousin even cracked the door to throw his gum in the river !

  • i went on the gondola... was just little... it scared me so bad i was tramatized. it was SO high and it was small and swung around if anyone moved or the wind blew. holy bajeezus.

  • I heard some one bought the gondola carts. some one from Mississippi.

  • thanks for posting this my family and I were born in New Orleans La and I do remember going to this. The ferry crossing is actually still a piece of history that holds it.

The esclators do not work though and right next to it is or was the aquarium.

  • Yikes! is right! My grandfather and I rode that gondola . Nice little breeze going on to make it sway a bit.

  • OUTSTANDING Slide Show!!!! Such a great video now that the 84 World's Fair is 25 YEARS OLD!

  • Thanks for posting this. I remember the day we went there was a total eclipse of the sun. Was a beautiful day and a wonderful experience.
