Intro to Left-Hand Position

Here is a three-year old learning how to hold her hand in preparation for learning notes on the violin. She is preparing her arm and hand for the unusual twist a violinist has to have when they play on the instrument. The method she is learning from is "Adventures in Violinland" by Shirley Givens and this is from Book 1A.

hi Lisa, I have a question. I want to learn the violin but i'm left-handed and would hold the bow in my left-hand. Am I stuck having to learn to play with the right hand?

Hi,

Violinists are both left-handed and right-handed people. It makes no difference in learning the instrument. Both hands are equally important. Unless you are missing fingers or something, you hold the violin in your left hand and the bow in your right. The fact that both hands do something different is what makes a string instrument so difficult to learn.

I use a series of books called "Adventures in Violinland" written by Shirley Givens and sold through SHAR. They are wonderfully systematic, layering each step carefully right from the beginning. And they have as a foundation the Galamian technique taught in most conservatories, so they teach correct technique from the beginning - not modified as in Suzuki methods.
